The Insurance Times Awards is the premier awards show for recognising and rewarding excellence in the insurance industry. Romero Insurance Brokers have been announced as winners in not one, but two awards.
Announced as winners of both the Claims Achievement Award and the Claims Team of the Year Award, Romero has been accredited for it’s excellent claims team and new holistic approach.
Claims Achievement Award - Winner
The claims achievement award recognises an instance of excellence where a claims team have shown to go above and beyond. Our submission involved a picturesque harbour town which had experienced devastating damage after a storm. This client’s incumbent broker had sadly mismanaged their policy and left the client underinsured – we stepped in and turned this around to secure a successful settlement for our client.
The judges said: “The winner went above and beyond the usual call of duty to fight for their client and deliver a feel-good solution with tenacity and persistence.”
Our entry included mention of our holistic claims service, highlighting how we enhanced our client’s experience. We helped battle reluctant insurers and former brokers who had mismanaged cover, securing settlements above expectations, saving the future of the harbour.
The harbour is culturally significant, and as well as being a UNESCO heritage site, it has evolved into a bustling tourist destination and hosts TV shows such as Poldark, Taboo and BAIT, as well as being home to a number of historic vessels.
The client reached out to Romero seeking help with the claim whilst it was in progress. They transferred their agency to us after recognising the technical expertise we had in our arsenal.
Our claims director and technical claims manager swiftly stepped in and started reviewing the claim mounting a persistent, well-based challenge to the insurer, meaning things started moving again in a positive direction for the client.
After our hard work, our claims experts were able to alter the insurers decision, securing a full £300,000 payout up front, allowing the harbour to invest in repair planning and subsequently carry out the repairs. In addition, we also secured an additional £100,000 payment to cover the costs of pumping water into the harbour whilst repairs were carried out.
The impact for our client can’t be overstated, and it’s a big reason why we were recognised for the Claims Achievement Award by Insurance Times Claims Excellence Awards.
Claims Team of the Year – Winner
The claims team of the year award recognises an outstanding team which is developing and showing results. Romero Insurance Brokers is proud to boast one of the largest independent broker claims teams in the North of England, with 27 full-time claims staff. We’ve also evolved our services to include HR, Risk Management and Health & Safety solutions, which is a large part of why we were winners of this year’s award.
The judges said: “Supported by a truly compelling list of statistics illustrating the importance of recruiting well and upskilling existing staff, the winner’s full-service ‘cradle to grave’ approach really stood out. The judges were impressed by the way they ensured their claims proposition was not only the key factor in aiding client retention, but also positioned at the heart of any new business acquisition.”
Our three pronged approach which swayed the judges included:

- Up-skilling our existing team through an in-house claims academy
- Investing in acquiring organisations that align with us and allow us to further expand how we’re able to help our clients.
Our full-service proposition to help prospects secure reduced premiums by our expert claim management, through to helping our clients up-skill their teams, to expertly handling claims.
We have seen increased incidences in insurers putting high claims reserves on claims, with many brokers leaving these unchecked, and artificially inflating premiums. We of course continually manage this on behalf of our own clients, but our experts have been able to increasingly do this for prospects.
